5 Acne Myths
There is just SO MUCH different information out there about acne, it’s hard to know where to start, what to believe, and if it will actually work for YOU (especially when you feel like you’ve tried everything). It’s… exhausting. So today, let's debunk some common acne myths that may be holding you back from clear skin. |
MYTH ONE: Studies show that acne comes from within – specific hormonal imbalances, inflammation, gut imbalances, poor liver detoxification, and more – and that your diet has a significant impact on each of these root causes. The key to clear skin starts from within. |
MYTH TWO:
The best way to address the causes of acne is with hormonal contraceptives, anti-androgens, or antibiotics. These medications can produce great results... but unfortunately, they are temporary. It is common for pimples to return after you stop taking these medications because these medications do not restore balance to your body or treat the underlying causes of acne. They are "band-aid" solutions that mask the symptoms and sometimes have unwanted side effects. The solution lies in identifying the root causes of your acne and then working to correct them through targeted diet and lifestyle changes that are rooted in the biology of our skin and our female bodies. |
MYTH THREE:
Since the causes of acne usually come from within, topical skin care is not important. Absolutely not! We need both internal and external care. Because just like foods, they can aggravate acne by irritating, inflaming and clogging... or they can help to balance and soothe acne. |
MYTH FOUR:
'Clean eating' is the remedy for acne. “Clean eating” has dozens of definitions, mostly not focused enough to truly address the root causes of acne that come from within—to balance your hormones, heal your gut, promote detoxification and liver health. Plus, some diets can actually make acne worse by spiking blood sugar levels (and therefore acne-causing hormones)! So ironic, but so true. While clean eating is a good start, we need a more targeted approach to healing your acne. |
MYTH FIVE:
Natural skin care = acne-safe skin care. Clean & green beauty does NOT mean that they won't clog your pores, or cause irritation and inflammation, making your pimples much worse. Each ingredient has a different 'fat profile', products with coconut butter are absolutely not recommended, because it has a very high value and can therefore clog the skin. |
