Matcha is a green tea from Japan, but its history begins in China. During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), it was popular to make powdered tea from steamed and dried tea leaves. The tea powder and hot water were whisked together. Zen Buddhists from Japan came into contact with matcha during their travels through China.
